Internal Tooth Bleaching
Brighten one dark tooth without covering it up.
A tooth that turned gray after trauma or a root canal can often be lightened from the inside, keeping your natural enamel instead of crowning it.

What is internal tooth bleaching?
Internal (walking) bleaching places a whitening agent inside a non-vital tooth, one that has had a root canal, to lighten discoloration that comes from within. Regular whitening can't reach this stain. It's done through a small opening in the back of the tooth, which is sealed afterward. Its main limitation: the tooth must have a sound root canal first, and color can slowly return over years.
Who is a candidate?
Often a good fit
- A single tooth darkened after trauma
- Teeth discolored after a root canal
- Patients who want to avoid a crown or veneer
- Front teeth with healthy surrounding structure
Needs extra care or planning
- Teeth without a completed root canal
- Large fillings or cracks in the tooth
- Signs of root resorption on X-ray
When an exam is needed: An exam and X-ray confirm the root canal is healthy and sealed before bleaching starts.
Problems it can address
Limitations: It won't change the shape of a tooth or fix deep cracks, and some stains (like metal-based ones) lighten only partly.

The treatment process
- 1
Exam & X-ray
We check the root canal and the cause of the stain.
- 2
Seal the root
A protective barrier is placed over the root filling.
- 3
Place the whitener
Whitening gel is sealed inside the tooth.
- 4
Check the shade
We review the color every few days and repeat if needed.
- 5
Final seal
The opening is closed with a tooth-colored filling.
Timeline: Usually 2–4 short visits over 1–3 weeks.

Call us right away if you notice
